Dai helped his folks plant the vineyard in 1985-86 with Pommard
Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The elevation here is 300
- 500 feet and even with a direct south facing exposure, it is
an extremely cool site that is prone to frost. An overhead frost
protection system makes it possible to farm wine grapes here.
Dai grows all of the Lumos fruit, here and at Temperance Hill
and Rudolfo, using Oregon Tilth Organic Certification standards.
All materials used in the vineyards are OMRI (Organic Materials
Review Institute) certified or Tilth approved. He uses mechanical
cultivation rather than herbicides and usually does two jobs at
once, like mowing while in-row cultivating, to increase the efficiency
of fuel and tractor use. All the handwork is done by a 13 man
crew, the core of which has been with Dai since 1999. Wineries
that purchase fruit from Wren Vineyard include Lumos, Ransom and Bergstrom.
There is a lot of activity going on here at the farm besides
work in the vineyard. We are currently involved in conservation
efforts to maintain critical habitat for the endangered Fender’s
Blue Butterfly. This little guy was once thought
to be extinct but surveys in the Cardwell Hills area discovered
a strongly promising population. We also have ongoing oak restoration
and riparian restoration projects. All of these efforts are available
for the public to see for themselves during our open house events
at the Lumos Tasting Room (one of the old H bar H guest
cabins). |
