Wren Vineyard is a little 10.5 acre site planted in the foothills of the Oregon Coast range. It is part of the Crisp family farm, a little 100+ acre spread bordered by the Marys River and within view of Marys Peak (highest mountain in the Coast range). The farm is what is left of the H bar H Dude Ranch, a popular vacation spot in the 1940's. Originally a one square mile section of land, the Ranch was made up of the main farmhouse (sadly burned down long ago), a bunkhouse, three small guest cabins and a large barn that held a restaurant and bar.

Dai’s folks purchased the farm in the early 70’s and went to work straight away to make it their own. They began work on a new house, shored up the cabins to rent to farmworkers, moved out the cattle and moved in the sheep, tore down chicken coops, cleaned up years of debris left from college students and renters and made plans for a vineyard.

Dai helped his folks plant the vineyard in 1985-86 with Pommard Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The elevation here is 300 - 500 feet and even with a direct south facing exposure, it is an extremely cool site that is prone to frost. An overhead frost protection system makes it possible to farm wine grapes here.

Dai grows all of the Lumos fruit, here and at Temperance Hill and Rudolfo, using Oregon Tilth Organic Certification standards. All materials used in the vineyards are OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) certified or Tilth approved. He uses mechanical cultivation rather than herbicides and usually does two jobs at once, like mowing while in-row cultivating, to increase the efficiency of fuel and tractor use. All the handwork is done by a 13 man crew, the core of which has been with Dai since 1999. Wineries that purchase fruit from Wren Vineyard include Lumos, Ransom and Bergstrom.

There is a lot of activity going on here at the farm besides work in the vineyard. We are currently involved in conservation efforts to maintain critical habitat for the endangered Fender’s Blue Butterfly. This little guy was once thought to be extinct but surveys in the Cardwell Hills area discovered a strongly promising population. We also have ongoing oak restoration and riparian restoration projects. All of these efforts are available for the public to see for themselves during our open house events at the Lumos Tasting Room (one of the old  H bar H guest cabins).
